I came across an article today by Peter Thibodeau on ComputerWorld.com titled “The Top 10 U.S. Locations for a Service Center,” which initially captured my interest knowing that there has been a significant increase in demand for Customer Service professionals in the Syracuse area. I take a glance at the article and see that, low and behold, Syracuse, NY is mentioned. Not only is it on the list, but it is ranked #1 by The Hackett Group as the top location for a company to open a service center.
The Hackett Group is a publically traded consulting firm with a global presence, providing business advisory services for big name companies like Walmart, Verizon, and Microsoft. Although the article was posted on Computer World, the study is not confined to information technology related service centers. The study includes support centers for any discipline – accounting, IT, human resources, etc. So, what are the contributing factors to determining the ideal location for a service center? According to the article, cost and availability of office space is a primary factor in contributing to the choice of an ideal location, but you also need a quality candidate pool to fill the seats.
“Syracuse has about 5,000 call center services jobs, about half of which were added in the past five years,” according to an official source reported by Thibodeau. With unemployment at 5.1% in Onondaga County, and plenty of office space available going for $20 per square foot on average, maybe it’s not so unimaginable that Syracuse is a top contender for companies to invest in building a Call Center.
