Drug Free Work Environment

By: Marielle Lanoir, PHR

There are many reasons as to why an organization would want to promote a drug free working environment; the most common way to achieve this is through conducting drug testing which will help to ensure the workplace remains as safe and productive as possible.

Unsure what steps to follow when conducting drug tests at your workplace or what protocol needs to be adhered to?  ADP (www.ADP.com), a leading national payroll service provider and employee benefits administrator, recently came out with a list of Frequently Asked Questions pertaining to drug testing in the work environment.

Here are 3 from their top 10 FAQ’s to help ensure your organization remains a safe and healthy environment:

Question:

Does your organization have to wait until after an offer of employment has been        made before requiring a drug test?

Answer:

Though you should always check with your states individual law pertaining to this issue, a common rule of thumb to follow is that drug testing should only be conducted after an offer of employment has been made.  However, the offer of employment can be conditional upon drug test results.

Question:

What documentation is required for drug testing?

Answer:

Again, it is important that you check with your states law, as they may have specific forms that are required to present to the individual being drug tested.  In addition, it is vital that you, the employer, provide a notice to the individual that you intend on conducting the drug test; you must have that individuals consent prior to the test being conducted.

Question:

Can I drug test an employee without a written drug test policy?

Answer:

Check to see if your state has any requirements pertaining to providing employees advanced notice of any drug testing prior to the actual test.  Should your state not have a requirement in place, it would be wise to sit down with your Human Resource Department and formulate a policy pertaining to drug testing in the workplace. This is vital to help ensure consistency within your workplace.
